Bio

I've always been a fan of information, always wanted to know exactly what was happening, anytime, any place, anywhere.

Indeed, on reflection I probably spent far too much of my childhood reeling through the pages of Teletext, as an inordinate amount of my memory power is now cluttered with useless sporting trivia from the 1980s.

So, back in my university days - early 1996 or thereabouts - when a friend of mine, one with a long-held dream of becoming a nerd, told me about some new-fangled technology called the Internet, which would simply blow Teletext out of the water. To tell you the truth I didn't believe him. In fact I felt like pummeling him. Don't take Teletext in vain and all that. But I was curious enough to accompany him to a lab at Queen's University, Belfast the next day to prove myself right. It took a full 20 minutes for me to get hooked, but only because it took that long to download a page using the Mosaic browser in those days.

I'm still hooked.

Just a few months after that first experience, as it turned out one of my classes was principally about creating webpages. That led to me developing my first website and, well, it's kind of what I've been doing ever since. Without fail though, I still check Teletext every single day. Some habits from a darker information age just can't be kicked.

Some of the people who have influenced me are technical, some are decidedly not so: Ambrose Bierce, Vito Corleone, Tim Berners-Lee, Homer Simpson.

Things that I like? Sport, all sport... ...but especially Gaelic Football. You will be happy to know that there are other things that I like, including: The Godfather, Skiing, Beer (ale in particular), long weekends, The Sopranos, holidays, Lost, days off, poker.
Music is probably not my greatest passion as the only thing on my iPod is the security tag.
